The semaglutide price you pay depends on where you live, which brand you use and which dose you are on. Wegovy can cost very different amounts in the UK, Ireland, Germany or France, and some countries now reimburse it while others don’t.

This guide compares the semaglutide price across Europe, with UK prices by dose, country-by-country costs, Ozempic vs Wegovy pricing, the new Wegovy pill, reimbursement changes in France and practical ways to save safely.

Why prices differ

The semaglutide price differs because Novo Nordisk sets different list prices in each country, based on local negotiations, health systems and competition. Pharmacy fees, consultation charges and VAT rules add further differences.

Exchange rates also affect the semaglutide price you see. A price that looks cheaper in euros may change once converted to pounds, and back again.

Key point

The headline “from” price is usually the starting dose. Budget for the maintenance dose, which is what you will pay for most of your treatment.

Semaglutide price: 9 proven facts

1. The starting dose is the cheapest month

Prices rise as the Wegovy dose increases towards 2.4mg.

2. UK prices vary widely

In October 2026, 2.4mg pens ranged from about £186 to £305 between UK pharmacies.

3. Ireland is similar to the UK

Wegovy costs roughly €180 to start and €220–€355 at maintenance.

4. Germany is self-pay

Statutory health insurance doesn’t cover weight loss medicines, so patients pay the full price.

5. France now reimburses some patients

From 15 June 2026, Wegovy and Mounjaro became reimbursable for eligible patients with obesity.

6. Ozempic is usually covered for diabetes

Public systems across Europe generally fund Ozempic for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss alone.

7. The Wegovy pill has its own pricing

In Germany, the lower-dose pill launched at about €172 a month.

8. A higher 7.2mg dose is priced separately

UK pharmacies listed 7.2mg pens from about £215 in October 2026.

9. There are no European generics yet

Patents are expected to protect semaglutide in Europe until around 2031.

UK prices

The UK semaglutide price for Wegovy depends heavily on where you buy it. A price check of 25 UK providers in October 2026 found pens ranging from about £90 to £150 at the 0.25mg starting dose, and about £186 to £305 at 2.4mg.

Ireland prices

The Irish semaglutide price is close to the UK. Wegovy costs roughly €180 at the starting dose, rising to about €220–€355 at maintenance. It is not covered by the HSE for weight loss.

Ozempic is free or capped for many people with type 2 diabetes under Irish schemes. See our guides on how much Wegovy costs in Ireland and how much Ozempic costs in Ireland, plus Wegovy discounts.

Germany prices

Germany has one of the higher semaglutide price levels in Europe. Weight loss medicines are excluded from statutory health insurance, so Wegovy is self-pay. Prices start around €170 a month at low doses and rise to €300 or more at higher doses.

The Wegovy pill became available in German pharmacies in September 2026, at about €172 for a month of the lower dose. See our German guides to Wegovy Preis Deutschland and Abnehmspritze Kosten.

France prices

France became the first European country to reimburse obesity medicines widely. From 15 June 2026, Wegovy and Mounjaro became reimbursable for eligible patients, with most expected to get full cover; see France’s decision to reimburse obesity medicines (Euronews).

Before reimbursement, the French semaglutide price for patients was around €300 a month for these injections. Eligibility depends on medical criteria set by the French health system.

Spain and other countries

The semaglutide price in Spain is among the lower ones in Western Europe. Wegovy is private-only for weight loss there, at roughly €175 to €220 a month. Denmark, home of Novo Nordisk, has similar list prices of roughly €185 to €230.

The semaglutide price in other countries varies, and access rules change often. Always check with a regulated local pharmacy before planning to buy abroad.

Ozempic vs Wegovy prices

Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide, but the semaglutide price for each is set and funded differently. Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes and is often covered by public health systems for that use.

Wegovy is licensed for weight management, comes in higher doses and is usually self-funded. Our Ozempic vs Wegovy guide explains the differences in detail.

Wegovy pill prices

The Wegovy pill gives a daily tablet alternative to weekly injections. In Germany, the lower-dose pill launched at about €172 for a month, with higher doses costing more.

In the UK, prices vary by pharmacy. See our Wegovy pill UK price guide and our Wegovy pill vs pen comparison.

Semaglutide vs tirzepatide prices

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) prices rose in the UK after Eli Lilly increased its list price in September 2025. As a result, Wegovy is now often the cheaper option at comparable stages of treatment.

Tirzepatide usually produces more weight loss, so value depends on results as well as price. Compare our Mounjaro cost UK and Wegovy vs Mounjaro guides.

Generics and future prices

Semaglutide patents began expiring in 2026 in countries including Canada, India, China and Brazil, where generic versions are bringing prices down sharply. In the UK and Europe, patents are expected to last until around 2031.

Until then, the semaglutide price in Europe will stay tied to branded Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus. Our semaglutide UK guide covers the patent timeline.

Buying abroad

Some people consider buying abroad to get a lower semaglutide price. This can be complicated: prescriptions may not transfer, pens need cold storage, and you may need ongoing monitoring at home.

Customs rules also apply to prescription medicines. Our guide to the cheapest country to buy Mounjaro explains the practical issues, which apply equally to Wegovy.

Ways to save

  • Compare several regulated pharmacies, including all fees
  • Ask whether a lower maintenance dose would work for you
  • Look for multi-pen or loyalty discounts from regulated providers
  • Check if you qualify for NHS or public access
  • Avoid paying for doses you don’t need by staying on a dose that works

See our Wegovy dosing schedule for how doses progress.

The yearly cost

Monthly figures can hide the true cost. Using average UK pen prices from October 2026, a first year on Wegovy (four step-up pens, then nine pens at 2.4mg) works out at roughly £2,450.

StagePensApprox. cost at average UK prices
Step-up (0.25mg to 1.7mg)4About £570
Maintenance (2.4mg)9About £1,885
Total first year13About £2,450

This is an estimate only; your own semaglutide price will depend on your pharmacy, dose and how quickly you step up. At the 2.4mg dose, that is roughly £52 a week.

NHS vs private costs

On the NHS, eligible patients get Wegovy through specialist weight management services and pay only the standard prescription charge in England, or nothing in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The catch is strict eligibility and long waiting lists.

Privately, you pay the full semaglutide price but can usually start within days. Many people compare both routes before deciding.

Diabetes vs weight loss pricing

For type 2 diabetes, semaglutide is usually funded by public health systems across Europe as Ozempic or Rybelsus. Patients may pay a small charge or nothing at all.

For weight loss, the semaglutide price is mostly paid by the patient, except in France for eligible patients and the NHS for some. That gap explains why the same active ingredient can feel cheap for one person and expensive for another.

What the price includes

Two pharmacies quoting the same semaglutide price may not offer the same service. Some include the consultation, delivery, needles and ongoing support, while others charge for each separately.

  • Online or in-person consultation
  • Pen needles and sharps bin
  • Delivery, often in cold packaging
  • Dose review and follow-up support
  • Subscription or membership fees

Always compare the full monthly cost, not just the pen price.

In 2024, shortages kept prices high and some doses hard to find. By 2026, supply had improved, competition between pharmacies increased and the Wegovy pill and 7.2mg dose arrived.

At the same time, Mounjaro became more expensive in the UK, making semaglutide relatively better value for some people. With generics arriving outside Europe, many expect the semaglutide price to keep falling over time.

Price by dose explained

Each Wegovy pen contains four weekly doses of one strength, so the semaglutide price per pen is roughly your monthly cost. Higher strengths contain more medicine, which is why they cost more.

Many people move through the lower doses quickly and spend most of their treatment on 2.4mg. That makes the maintenance dose the semaglutide price that matters most for budgeting.

Is paying more worth it?

A higher price doesn’t always mean better treatment, but it can include valuable extras such as clinical support, dose reviews and reliable cold-chain delivery. Those extras can make treatment safer and easier to stick with.

A very low semaglutide price, on the other hand, can be a warning sign. Licensed medicine from a regulated pharmacy is always worth more than a bargain of unknown origin.

Insurance and employer schemes

Most private health insurance in the UK does not cover weight loss medicines, but policies vary. Some employers offer wellbeing schemes that may help with costs.

Check your policy or HR benefits before assuming you must pay the full semaglutide price yourself.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Does the price include consultation, needles and delivery?
  • Will the price change when my dose increases?
  • Is the pharmacy registered with the GPhC?
  • What support do I get if I have side effects?
  • Can I pause or cancel easily?

Clear answers help you compare the real semaglutide price between providers.

Switching to save money

Some people consider switching from the injection to the Wegovy pill, or from Mounjaro to Wegovy, partly because of cost. The semaglutide price for each form differs, and doses are not directly interchangeable.

Any switch should be planned with your prescriber, who can choose the right starting dose and check that the cheaper option still suits your goals. Saving money is only worthwhile if treatment keeps working.

Key takeaways

  • The semaglutide price varies by country, brand, dose and pharmacy
  • UK Wegovy pens cost about £90–£150 to start and £186–£305 at 2.4mg (Oct 2026)
  • Ireland is similar to the UK; Germany is self-pay; France now reimburses eligible patients
  • Ozempic is often publicly funded for diabetes, unlike Wegovy for weight loss
  • No European generics are expected until around 2031

When comparing semaglutide price offers, look at the yearly cost, what is included and whether the seller is regulated.

Avoiding unsafe deals

High demand has led to fake and unlicensed semaglutide being sold online and on social media. These products may contain the wrong dose, no active ingredient or harmful contaminants.

Buy safely

Only buy semaglutide from a regulated pharmacy with a prescription. Be cautious of prices far below the normal semaglutide price range, products without UK packaging, or sellers who don’t ask about your health.

Budgeting for long-term treatment

Semaglutide is usually a long-term treatment, and stopping often leads to weight regain, so the semaglutide price matters over many months. When comparing prices, think about the cost over a year, not just the first month.

Plan for the maintenance dose, check whether prices include support and delivery, and review your progress regularly with your prescriber.

The cheapest semaglutide price is not always the best value. Licensed medicine, safe supply and good support matter as much as the monthly cost.

Common questions — Semaglutide Price

List prices for Wegovy tend to be lower in countries such as Spain and Denmark than in Germany. But the real semaglutide price you pay depends on reimbursement, pharmacy fees and dose.
They are broadly similar. In Ireland, Wegovy costs roughly €180 at the starting dose and €220–€355 at maintenance, which is close to UK private prices once converted.
France began reimbursing Wegovy and Mounjaro for eligible patients with obesity from 15 June 2026. Most other countries do not reimburse semaglutide for weight loss alone.
Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes and is often covered by public health systems for that use. Wegovy is licensed for weight management, comes in higher doses and is usually paid for privately.
No. Semaglutide is still protected by patents in the UK and Europe, expected until around 2031. Generics launched in 2026 in some non-European countries.
In Germany, the lower-dose Wegovy pill launched at about €172 for a month’s supply in 2026. UK prices vary by pharmacy; see our Wegovy pill price guide.
Yes. The semaglutide price rises with the dose, because higher Wegovy doses usually cost more, so the starting dose is the cheapest month and the 2.4mg maintenance dose is the most expensive.
Only buy from regulated pharmacies with a prescription. Very cheap offers, especially from social media or unregulated websites, may be fake or unlicensed.
