Generic semaglutide — 7 proven facts for UK buyers.
Generic semaglutide made headlines in 2026 as copies of Ozempic and Wegovy went on sale in India, Canada and Brazil. Many UK readers now want to know when generic semaglutide will be available here, and how much it might cost.
This guide explains what generic semaglutide is, where it is already sold, what it costs, when it is expected in the UK, and how it differs from compounded or research semaglutide. It also covers cheaper licensed options you can use today.

Explore Wegovy →Generic semaglutide: what it is
Generic semaglutide is a copy of the active ingredient in Wegovy, Ozempic and Rybelsus, made by a company other than Novo Nordisk. It can only be sold once the original patents have expired or lapsed in that country.
Like other generics, generic semaglutide has to be approved by a national regulator. The maker must show that its product matches the original closely enough to work in the same way.
Because the company did not pay for the original research and trials, generic semaglutide is usually much cheaper. Prices fall further as more makers enter the market.
Generic semaglutide is a licensed medicine where it is approved. That makes it very different from research or compounded semaglutide sold online.

Where generic semaglutide is available
The patents protecting semaglutide expire at different times in different countries. That is why generic semaglutide is already on sale in some places but not in others.
| Country | Status in 2026 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| India | On sale since March 2026 | Many makers launched on day one, sparking a price war |
| Canada | On sale since May 2026 | First G7 country to approve generic semaglutide |
| Brazil | On sale from mid-2026 | First copy priced about 30% below Ozempic |
| China | Applications under review | Patent protection ends in 2026 |
| United States | Not on sale | Key patent runs to 2032 |
| UK and EU | Not on sale | Patent protection until around 2031 |
The table reflects the position in autumn 2026. Approvals are moving quickly, so check for updates before relying on any single market.
India: the first big launch
Semaglutide lost patent protection in India in March 2026. Within a day, companies including Dr Reddy’s, Sun Pharma, Glenmark, Alkem, Zydus and Natco launched their own versions.
Brands such as Obeda, Noveltreat, Glipiq and Semanat came to market as pens or vials. This made India the largest early market for semaglutide copies.
| Product (maker) | Form | Reported monthly price |
|---|---|---|
| Original Ozempic | Pen | About Rs 8,800 at the starting dose |
| Original Wegovy | Pen | About Rs 10,850 at the starting dose |
| Obeda (Dr Reddy’s) | Pen | About Rs 4,200 |
| Glipiq (Glenmark) | Vial | About Rs 1,300–1,760 |
| Semanat (Natco) | Vial | From about Rs 1,290 |
At current exchange rates, the cheapest vials work out at roughly £11–£15 a month. Pens cost more, but they are still well below the original brand price.
Canada: the first G7 approval
In April 2026, Health Canada approved its first generic version of Ozempic, made by Dr Reddy’s. The approval was for adults with type 2 diabetes.
Generic semaglutide became possible in Canada after Novo Nordisk did not pay a small patent maintenance fee, so protection lapsed early. Two generic versions began arriving in Canadian pharmacies in May 2026, with more applications under review.
Canadian generic pricing rules mean prices fall as more makers join. With three or more generics, prices are expected to drop to around a third of the brand price.
Brazil and China
Brazil
Brazil’s semaglutide patent expired in March 2026. Local drugmaker EMS launched a copy called Ozivy, priced about 30% below Ozempic, and a second generic pen was approved in August 2026.
China
China’s main semaglutide patent also ends in 2026. Several companies have applied for approval, and launches are expected once reviews are complete.
When will generics reach the UK?
In the UK and most of Europe, the main patent protecting semaglutide is expected to run until around 2031. Until then, generic semaglutide cannot legally be made or sold here.
Other patents and data protections can sometimes delay generics further. It is realistic to expect UK generic semaglutide in the early 2030s rather than sooner.
| Market | Expected earliest generic semaglutide |
|---|---|
| India, Canada, Brazil | Already available (2026) |
| China | 2026–2027 |
| UK | Around 2031 |
| EU (e.g. Germany) | Around 2031 |
| Japan | Around 2031 |
| United States | Around 2032 |
Some UK websites already advertise “generic semaglutide”. No generic has an MHRA licence, so these products are unlicensed.
How generics are approved
Semaglutide is a peptide, a chain of amino acids, rather than a simple chemical. That makes copies harder to make than an ordinary tablet generic.
Regulators ask makers to prove the copy has the same structure, purity and strength as the original. They also check how the medicine behaves in the body, and that the pen or vial delivers the right dose.
Some countries treat these copies as standard generics, while others use a stricter pathway. Either way, the product must pass a full regulatory review before it reaches pharmacies.
Who makes the copies?
Most early copies come from large Indian and Canadian manufacturers with experience of complex injectables. Dr Reddy’s, Sun Pharma, Glenmark, Sandoz and Apotex are among the best-known names.
Many of these companies already supply generic medicines to the UK. When patents expire here, several are likely to apply to the MHRA at the same time.
A familiar manufacturer name on a website does not make a product legal in the UK. Only an MHRA licence does that.
Will Wegovy prices fall before 2031?
Possibly. Competition is growing even without UK generics, from Mounjaro, the Wegovy pill and newer medicines in development.
Price changes have already happened in other markets as copies launched. Novo Nordisk has also cut list prices in several countries and introduced cheaper tablet options.
In the UK, private prices differ a lot between providers. Our Wegovy vs Mounjaro guide compares the two main options on cost and results.
How to spot a legal seller
If you buy semaglutide online in the UK, a few quick checks help you avoid unlicensed products.
- The pharmacy is registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council
- You complete a medical consultation before any prescription
- The product is a named brand such as Wegovy, Ozempic or the Wegovy pill
- It arrives chilled, in original sealed packaging with a UK leaflet
- The seller never offers semaglutide “for research use only”
If any of these are missing, walk away. A low price is not worth the risk of a fake or contaminated product.
Generic vs brand semaglutide
Where it is approved, generic semaglutide contains the same active ingredient as the brand. The main differences are the name, the pen or vial, and the price.
| Feature | Brand (Wegovy / Ozempic) | Approved generic semaglutide |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Semaglutide | Semaglutide |
| Regulator approval | Yes | Yes, in its own country |
| Clinical trial data | Full trials by Novo Nordisk | Relies on the original data plus comparison studies |
| Device | FlexTouch pen | Pen or vial, varies by maker |
| Price | Higher | Usually much lower |
| Available in the UK | Yes | No |
Some early copies come in vials rather than pens. Vials need separate syringes and careful dose measuring.
Doses and side effects
An approved copy is used in the same way as the original brand. It starts at a low weekly dose and increases gradually, following the same steps as Wegovy or Ozempic.
Side effects are also expected to be the same, because the active ingredient is identical. Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and reduced appetite are the most common, especially after a dose increase.
Our Wegovy side effects guide explains how to manage them, and the first week of semaglutide guide covers what to expect at the start.
Generic vs compounded or research semaglutide
People often confuse generic semaglutide with compounded or research semaglutide. They are not the same thing.
An approved generic has been checked by a regulator for quality, strength and purity. Compounded or “research use only” semaglutide is made outside that system and is not a licensed medicine in the UK.
Our research peptides UK legal guide explains the legal position. The best peptides for fat loss UK guide covers the wider peptide market.
Unlicensed semaglutide can be underdosed, overdosed or contaminated. Stick to licensed brands from a regulated UK pharmacy.
The liraglutide example
The UK has already seen what happens when a GLP-1 patent ends. Generic liraglutide, the medicine in Saxenda and Victoza, is now available here after its patent expired.
Liraglutide is a daily injection and usually leads to less weight loss than semaglutide. It does show that generic GLP-1 medicines can bring prices down once protection ends.
Expect a similar pattern when semaglutide patents end here. Several makers are likely to launch at once, pushing prices down quickly.
What will generics cost?
Nobody can confirm UK prices for these copies yet. Other markets give a useful guide.
- In India, generic semaglutide launched at roughly half the brand price or less
- In Brazil, the first copy launched about 30% below Ozempic
- In Canada, prices are expected to fall further as more makers join
- In the UK, Wegovy currently costs from about £90–£150 a month at 0.25mg and £186–£305 at 2.4mg

Can you import it from abroad?
With generic semaglutide on sale in India and Canada, some people ask about ordering it from abroad. This carries real risks.
- Overseas websites may sell fake or unregulated products
- Semaglutide must be kept cold, and long shipping can damage it
- Parcels containing medicines can be seized at the border
- You lose the safety checks and support of a UK prescriber
Generic semaglutide is not licensed for sale in the UK. The safest route is a licensed brand from a regulated UK pharmacy.
What about tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide, sold as Mounjaro, is a newer medicine with patent protection that runs well into the 2030s. A generic version is not expected soon in the UK or Europe.
Read our semaglutide vs tirzepatide and tirzepatide UK guides to compare the two medicines.
How generics could change the market
Cheaper generic semaglutide in large markets is putting pressure on brand prices worldwide. Novo Nordisk and Lilly have already cut some prices and launched new options such as tablets and higher doses.
When generic semaglutide does reach the UK, it could make treatment far more affordable for private patients. It may also help the NHS treat more people.
Lower prices would also make long-term maintenance easier to afford. Many people need to stay on treatment for years to keep the weight off, so cost matters over the long run.
Generic semaglutide is coming to the UK, but not yet. Until then, licensed brands are the only safe choice.
