Semaglutide is made by Novo Nordisk and sold under four main brand names in the UK and Europe. Each of the semaglutide brands has its own licence, doses and device.
Knowing the difference matters, because the brands are not interchangeable without medical advice. One is for weight management, another for diabetes, and two are tablets.

| Rybelsus | Daily tablet | Type 2 diabetes | 3mg, 7mg, 14mg |
All licensed semaglutide brands in Europe are made by Novo Nordisk. Generics are not expected until around 2031.

Wegovy: the weight management brand
Wegovy is the semaglutide brand licensed for weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with weight-related health conditions. It is injected once a week.
Doses rise from 0.25mg to the 2.4mg maintenance dose over about 16 weeks, and a higher 7.2mg dose has been approved for some patients. The European Medicines Agency information on Wegovy sets out the EU licence.
In the STEP-1 trial, Wegovy 2.4mg led to average weight loss of 14.9%. The SELECT trial also showed around a 20% reduction in major heart events in people with heart disease.

The Wegovy pill
The Wegovy pill is a daily semaglutide tablet for weight management. It starts at a low dose and builds up to 25mg.
It was approved in the UK in June 2026 and by the European Commission in July 2026. Germany became the first EU country to launch it in September 2026.
The tablet must be taken on an empty stomach with a small sip of water. Our Wegovy pill vs pen and how to take the Wegovy pill correctly guides explain more.
Ozempic: the diabetes brand
Ozempic is the semaglutide brand licensed for type 2 diabetes. It is a weekly injection, used at 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg or 2mg.
Ozempic became famous for weight loss, but it is not licensed for weight management. Wegovy is the brand designed for that.
Our Ozempic vs Wegovy guide explains the differences, and our Ozempic for weight loss guide covers the common questions.
Rybelsus: the diabetes tablet
Rybelsus was the first semaglutide tablet. It is licensed for type 2 diabetes and taken once a day.
Treatment usually starts at 3mg for a month, then moves to 7mg, with 14mg used if more blood sugar control is needed.
Our oral semaglutide tablet guide compares Rybelsus with the Wegovy pill.
Pens and devices compared
The device is one of the main differences between semaglutide brands. UK and EU pens differ from those used in the US.
| Brand | Device in the UK and EU | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy | FlexTouch pen with four weekly doses | Strength fixed per pen |
| Ozempic | Pre-filled pen with several weekly doses | Dose selected on the pen |
| Wegovy pill | Daily tablets | No injections |
| Rybelsus | Daily tablets | No injections |
Pen needles are usually supplied separately. Our how to inject Wegovy and how to inject Ozempic guides show you how to use each pen.

Semaglutide brands in the UK
In the UK, Wegovy pens and the Wegovy pill are available privately from registered pharmacies and through the NHS for eligible patients. Ozempic and Rybelsus are prescribed for type 2 diabetes.
UK Wegovy pen prices vary widely between providers. In October 2026, typical private prices ranged from around £90–£150 a month at 0.25mg to £186–£305 at 2.4mg.

Germany and Ireland
In Germany, weight management medicines such as Wegovy are generally paid privately, as statutory health insurance excludes most weight loss treatments. The Wegovy pill launched there in September 2026 at around €172 a month.
German readers can see our Wegovy Preis Deutschland and Mounjaro vs Wegovy vs Ozempic Deutschland guides.
In Ireland, most people pay privately for Wegovy. Our how much is Wegovy in Ireland guide has current prices.
France and reimbursement
France began reimbursing Wegovy and Mounjaro for some patients from 15 June 2026. Before that, patients typically paid around €300 a month privately.
Reimbursement usually comes with strict eligibility criteria, such as a high BMI and related health conditions. Rules differ in every country.
Generic semaglutide
Outside Europe, generic semaglutide brands launched in 2026 in countries such as India, Canada and Brazil. These include brands like Obeda in India and Ozivy in Brazil.
In the UK and most of Europe, semaglutide patents run until around 2031. Our generic semaglutide guide explains the timeline.
How the brands developed
The semaglutide brands arrived one at a time as Novo Nordisk expanded the medicine into new uses and forms.
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 2017–2018 | Ozempic approved in the US and EU for type 2 diabetes |
| 2019–2020 | Rybelsus approved as the first oral semaglutide for diabetes |
| 2021–2022 | Wegovy approved for weight management in the US, UK and EU |
| 2024 | Wegovy licence expanded to reduce heart risk in some patients |
| 2025–2026 | Higher 7.2mg Wegovy dose approved for some patients |
| 2026 | Wegovy pill approved in the UK and EU |
Each step added a new choice, but all semaglutide brands share the same active ingredient.
Are the brands the same medicine?
Yes. All semaglutide brands contain semaglutide made by Novo Nordisk. The differences are dose, licence, device and how the medicine is absorbed.
Tablets need much higher doses than injections, because only a small amount of semaglutide is absorbed through the stomach. That is why the Wegovy pill goes up to 25mg while the Wegovy pen tops out at 2.4mg for most people.
This also means doses cannot be swapped directly between semaglutide brands. A prescriber must plan any switch.
Switching between brands
People sometimes switch between semaglutide brands, for example from Ozempic to Wegovy, or from a pen to the Wegovy pill. This should always be done with a prescriber.
When moving from an injection to a tablet, the dose is not a simple conversion. Your prescriber will choose a suitable starting point and monitor side effects.
Switching from Ozempic to Wegovy may happen if someone without diabetes was using Ozempic for weight loss. Wegovy is the licensed choice for weight management.
Side effects across brands
Because they contain the same medicine, all semaglutide brands share similar side effects. Nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation are the most common, especially after dose increases.
Our semaglutide side effects by dose guide explains what to expect at each step, and our Wegovy pill side effects vs injection guide compares tablets and pens.
Supply and shortages
Semaglutide brands faced shortages in 2022 and 2023 as demand soared. Supply has since improved across the UK and Europe, with all strengths widely available.
During shortages, regulators asked doctors to prioritise Ozempic for people with diabetes. This is one reason it is important to use the brand licensed for your condition.
Travelling with semaglutide
If you travel within Europe, you will find the same semaglutide brands in pharmacies, although packaging and languages differ. Always carry your prescription and keep pens in hand luggage.
Pens should be kept cool, and tablets in their original packaging. Never buy semaglutide abroad without a local prescription.
Comparing costs between brands
Costs vary between semaglutide brands as well as countries. In the UK, Wegovy pens and the Wegovy pill are both paid privately by most patients, with prices depending on dose and provider.
Ozempic and Rybelsus are usually prescribed for diabetes on the NHS, so most patients in England pay only a standard prescription charge, or nothing if they are exempt.
For private weight management, compare providers carefully. Our semaglutide price Europe guide covers costs across the region.
Wegovy 7.2mg: a new higher dose
One of the newest changes to semaglutide brands is the higher 7.2mg Wegovy dose. It is for some patients who need more weight loss after reaching 2.4mg.
The higher dose brings extra weight loss but also more digestive side effects. Your prescriber will decide whether it is right for you.
It shows how semaglutide brands continue to evolve, even years after their first approval.
Storage by brand
| Brand | Before first use | After first use |
|---|---|---|
| Wegovy pen | Fridge, 2–8°C | Follow the leaflet; limited time out of the fridge |
| Ozempic pen | Fridge, 2–8°C | Can be kept below 30°C or in the fridge for a set period |
| Wegovy pill | Room temperature | Keep in original packaging |
| Rybelsus | Room temperature | Keep in original blister pack |
Always check the patient leaflet for your brand, as storage rules differ between semaglutide brands and devices.
Who makes semaglutide?
All semaglutide brands are made by Novo Nordisk, a Danish pharmaceutical company. It is one of the world’s largest makers of diabetes and obesity medicines.
Novo Nordisk holds the patents on semaglutide in the UK and Europe until around 2031. Until then, no other company can legally sell licensed semaglutide brands here.
Its main competitor is Eli Lilly, which makes tirzepatide. Competition between the two companies has helped drive new options such as tablets and higher doses.
Questions to ask your prescriber
- Which semaglutide brand is licensed for my condition?
- Would a pen or a tablet suit me better?
- How quickly will my dose increase?
- What side effects should I expect?
- How much will treatment cost each month?
Your prescriber can explain the differences between semaglutide brands and help you choose the one that fits your health and lifestyle.
Names you may see abroad
Outside Europe, you may see semaglutide brands you don’t recognise. In India, Brazil and Canada, generic versions launched in 2026 under local names.
These generic semaglutide brands are not licensed in the UK or EU. Buying them online or bringing them back from abroad carries real risks.
If you are unsure about a product, check the active ingredient and whether it is licensed in your country.
NHS access to semaglutide
On the NHS, Wegovy is offered to eligible patients through specialist weight management services, following NICE guidance. Access is limited and waiting lists can be long.
Ozempic and Rybelsus are prescribed on the NHS for type 2 diabetes when other treatments are not enough. NICE is also reviewing the Wegovy pill for NHS use.
Most people who want Wegovy for weight management choose a private provider for faster access. Private treatment uses exactly the same licensed brand as the NHS.
Benefits beyond weight loss
Wegovy has shown benefits beyond weight loss. In the SELECT trial, semaglutide 2.4mg cut major heart events by around 20% in people with heart disease and overweight or obesity.
Ozempic also has evidence for heart and kidney benefits in people with type 2 diabetes. These extra benefits are part of why semaglutide brands are so widely prescribed.
Fake and unlicensed products
Because semaglutide brands are in high demand, fake pens and unlicensed products are common. Regulators in the UK and EU have warned about falsified Ozempic pens.
- Buy only from registered pharmacies
- Expect a consultation before any prescription
- Check packaging and leaflets are in your local language
- Avoid vials, powders and unbranded pens
- Never buy semaglutide through social media
Our compounded semaglutide guide explains the risks of unlicensed products.
Choosing the right brand
Choosing between semaglutide brands depends on why you are being treated and how you prefer to take it.
| If you… | Brand to discuss |
|---|---|
| Want weight management with weekly injections | Wegovy pen |
| Want weight management without injections | Wegovy pill |
| Have type 2 diabetes and prefer injections | Ozempic |
| Have type 2 diabetes and prefer tablets | Rybelsus |
Your prescriber will help you choose based on your health, goals and budget.
Some people start on one brand and later move to another, for example from Wegovy injections to the Wegovy pill once their weight has stabilised. Others prefer to stay with what works. There is no single right answer, only the right brand for your needs and lifestyle.
Semaglutide vs tirzepatide
Tirzepatide, sold mainly as Mounjaro, is the main alternative to semaglutide. It often leads to more weight loss but costs more in the UK.
Read our semaglutide vs tirzepatide and tirzepatide brands guides to compare the two families.
