Tirzepatide brands can be confusing. You may hear about Mounjaro, Zepbound, Yurpeak, KwikPens and vials, often in the same conversation.

This guide explains each tirzepatide brand, where it is sold, what it is licensed for, how the devices differ, how prices compare and which brand you can get in the UK and Europe.

The UK tirzepatide brand

In the UK, licensed tirzepatide is Mounjaro. See pricing for every KwikPen strength.

Tirzepatide brands: an overview

Tirzepatide is made by Eli Lilly and sold under different names around the world. Knowing the tirzepatide brands helps you understand news stories, online forums and prices from other countries.

All genuine tirzepatide brands contain the same active ingredient. The differences are the name, the licensed uses, the device and the price.

Key point

In the UK, the only licensed tirzepatide brand is Mounjaro.

5 best proven differences

1. Brand name

Mounjaro is the original brand. Zepbound and Yurpeak are later brand names used in the US and India.

2. Licensed uses

In the US, Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes and Zepbound for weight management. In the UK and EU, Mounjaro covers both.

3. Device

UK Mounjaro comes in a four-dose KwikPen. US brands come in single-dose pens and vials.

4. Price

Prices vary hugely between countries and devices. US self-pay vials, UK private KwikPens and Indian pens all cost different amounts.

5. Availability

You can only legally get the brand licensed in your country, from a registered prescriber and pharmacy.

Mounjaro: the main brand

Mounjaro was the first of the tirzepatide brands, approved in the US in May 2022 for type 2 diabetes. It is now sold in most countries.

In January 2024, the MHRA approved the four-dose Mounjaro KwikPen, holding a month of treatment at one dose a week. It is licensed for both type 2 diabetes and weight management in the UK.

KwikPen strengthTypical use

10mgStep up if needed
12.5mgStep up if needed
15mgMaximum dose

See our tirzepatide dosage chart for the full schedule, and our how to inject Mounjaro guide for using the KwikPen.

Zepbound: the US weight loss brand

Zepbound joined the tirzepatide brands in November 2023, when it was approved in the US for chronic weight management. In December 2024, it was also approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnoea in adults with obesity.

Zepbound comes in single-dose pens and in vials sold directly through Lilly’s own pharmacy service. US self-pay prices for vials start lower than pens.

Zepbound is not sold in the UK. Our Wegovy vs Zepbound guide compares it with the leading semaglutide brand.

Yurpeak and other markets

In India, Lilly sells tirzepatide as Mounjaro and also as Yurpeak, distributed by Cipla. Yurpeak contains the same medicine at the same price as Mounjaro there.

Second tirzepatide brands like this help a manufacturer reach more doctors and pharmacies. They do not change the medicine.

Other countries may add new tirzepatide brands or packs in future. Always check the active ingredient on the label.

KwikPens, pens and vials

The device is one of the biggest differences between tirzepatide brands. It affects convenience, price and how doses are measured.

DeviceWhere usedHow it works
Four-dose KwikPenUK, EU and other marketsPre-filled pen with four weekly doses of one strength
Single-dose penUSAuto-injector used once, then thrown away
Single-dose vialUSDraw up one dose with a syringe

The UK KwikPen needs a new pen needle for each injection. Needles are usually supplied separately by your pharmacy.

Watch out

Vials of tirzepatide sold online in the UK are not licensed brands. Read our compounded tirzepatide guide before buying anything outside a pharmacy.

Vials in the UK explained

Many people see US Zepbound vials discussed online and assume all tirzepatide brands offer vials in the UK. Licensed UK tirzepatide is only supplied as the Mounjaro KwikPen.

Tirzepatide vials sold by UK websites are unlicensed, often labelled for research. Our compounded tirzepatide guide explains the risks.

Are the brands the same medicine?

Yes. Every genuine tirzepatide brand contains tirzepatide made by Eli Lilly. The doses run from 2.5mg to 15mg weekly across all of them.

In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, tirzepatide led to average weight loss of 15.0%, 19.5% and 20.9% at 5mg, 10mg and 15mg. Those results apply to the medicine, whichever brand name it carries.

Our Mounjaro weight loss results guide covers what people see in practice.

Tirzepatide brands in the UK

In the UK, Mounjaro is the only licensed tirzepatide brand. It is available privately through registered online and high street pharmacies, and through the NHS for eligible patients.

Private prescriptions require a consultation, and pens are posted chilled. You will need pen needles and a sharps bin.

Read our tirzepatide UK guide for how to get started, or compare options in cheapest way to buy Mounjaro UK.

Across Europe

Across the EU, tirzepatide is sold as Mounjaro, licensed for type 2 diabetes and weight management. Reimbursement rules differ by country.

France began reimbursing Mounjaro for some patients from June 2026, while in many countries weight loss treatment is still paid privately. Our German readers can see our Mounjaro guides for Germany.

More tirzepatide brands and uses may follow as Lilly expands into new markets and conditions.

Diabetes vs weight loss licences

One reason tirzepatide brands differ is the licensed use. In the US, Lilly uses Mounjaro for diabetes and Zepbound for weight management.

In the UK and EU, one brand covers both. Mounjaro is licensed for type 2 diabetes and for weight management in adults with obesity, or overweight with weight-related conditions.

Our Mounjaro for type 2 diabetes guide covers diabetes use in more detail.

Strengths across brands

All tirzepatide brands use the same six strengths: 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 12.5mg and 15mg. The starting dose is always 2.5mg for four weeks.

Doses then increase in steps of at least four weeks, only if needed and tolerated. Many people stay on a middle dose that works well for them.

Because strengths match across tirzepatide brands, doses are easy to compare between countries.

Travelling with tirzepatide

If you travel abroad, take your UK Mounjaro KwikPen in hand luggage with your prescription. Pens should be kept cool and never packed in the hold.

Abroad, you may see other tirzepatide brands in pharmacies, such as Zepbound in the US. Don’t buy medicine abroad without a local prescription, and check that any replacement contains tirzepatide at your usual dose.

Keep injecting on the same day each week where possible, adjusting by a few hours for time zones.

For longer trips, take enough pens for the whole journey plus a spare week, and carry a letter from your prescriber explaining the medicine and needles.

Storage by device

DeviceBefore first useAfter first use
UK Mounjaro KwikPenFridge, 2–8°CFollow the leaflet; can be kept out of the fridge for a limited time
US single-dose penFridge, 2–8°CUsed once and discarded
US vialFridge, 2–8°CSingle use, then discarded

Always follow the patient leaflet for your brand. Storage rules can differ between devices and countries, so never assume advice for one brand applies to another.

NHS access and brands

On the NHS, tirzepatide is supplied as Mounjaro for eligible patients through specialist weight services and, increasingly, primary care. Access is being rolled out gradually.

Whether you get Mounjaro on the NHS or privately, it is the same licensed brand. Private treatment is faster but you pay the full cost.

Mounjaro vs Zepbound side by side

Mounjaro and Zepbound are the two best-known tirzepatide brands. This table shows how they compare.

For UK patients, the comparison is mostly academic. Mounjaro is the tirzepatide brand you will be prescribed here.

The future of tirzepatide

Tirzepatide is being studied for more conditions, which could lead to new licences or even new tirzepatide brands. Trials have looked at heart failure, sleep apnoea, kidney disease and liver disease.

In the US, Zepbound’s sleep apnoea licence shows how new uses can be added to existing brands. Similar changes may come to the UK and Europe over time.

Lilly is also developing newer medicines such as retatrutide. Our retatrutide vs tirzepatide guide explains how they compare.

Nicknames you may see online

Online, people often use nicknames rather than official tirzepatide brands. You may see “tirz” or simply “MJ” in forums and social media, alongside the official tirzepatide brands.

Sellers of unlicensed products use the same nicknames to avoid detection. Genuine tirzepatide brands are always sold under their official names by registered pharmacies.

If a product is only described by a nickname or code, treat it with suspicion. It is unlikely to be a licensed medicine.

Questions to ask your pharmacist

  • Which tirzepatide brand and strength am I getting?
  • How many doses does each pen hold?
  • Are pen needles included or separate?
  • How should I store the pen at home and when travelling?
  • What should I do if I miss a dose?

A good pharmacist will answer clearly and can show you how to use your pen. Ask again whenever your strength changes.

If you have used other tirzepatide brands abroad, mention this too. It helps your pharmacist and prescriber make sure your dose and device are right, and that you understand how the UK pen differs from other tirzepatide brands.

Spotting fake brands

Because tirzepatide brands are expensive, fake pens and unlicensed products are common. Criminals copy packaging and sell through social media and unregistered websites.

  • Buy only from GPhC-registered UK pharmacies
  • Expect a consultation before any prescription
  • Check the pen matches UK Mounjaro KwikPen packaging
  • Be wary of vials, powders and unbranded pens
  • Never buy from social media messages

If something feels wrong, don’t use it. Report suspected fakes to the MHRA Yellow Card scheme.

Switching between brands

If you move country, you may need to switch between tirzepatide brands. Because the medicine is the same, your prescriber can usually continue your current dose.

The device may change, for example from a US single-dose pen to a UK KwikPen. Ask for a demonstration so you know how to use the new device.

If you are switching from semaglutide, see our semaglutide vs tirzepatide guide.

Generic tirzepatide

There are no generic tirzepatide brands yet. The medicine is under patent until well into the 2030s.

This is different from semaglutide, where generics launched in some countries in 2026. Our generic semaglutide guide explains that story.

Choosing a provider

Since only one of the tirzepatide brands is licensed in the UK, the real choice is the provider. Prices, support and delivery vary widely.

  • Check the pharmacy is GPhC-registered
  • Compare monthly prices at your dose
  • Look for clinical support and follow-ups
  • Check delivery and cold-chain packaging
  • Ask about payment plans

See our Mounjaro payment plans UK guide for ways to spread the cost.

Side effects across brands

Because all tirzepatide brands contain the same medicine, side effects are the same whichever brand you use. Nausea, diarrhoea, constipation and reduced appetite are the most common.

Side effects are usually strongest after starting or increasing a dose, and ease over time. Eating smaller meals and drinking plenty of water helps.

Our Mounjaro side effects guide explains what to expect and when to seek help.

Which tirzepatide brand should you use?

The right choice among tirzepatide brands is simply the licensed brand in your country. In the UK, that is Mounjaro.

Focus on choosing a reputable provider, the right dose and good support. Those make far more difference to your results than the name on the box.

If cost is a concern, compare providers and ask about payment plans rather than looking for unofficial tirzepatide brands online.

Key takeaways

  • Mounjaro is the main tirzepatide brand and the only one licensed in the UK
  • Zepbound is a US brand for weight management and sleep apnoea
  • Yurpeak is a second brand in India
